Gratitude That Lasts
Then there are those days when there just doesn't seem to be enough time in the day, you might be unrested and cranky, perhaps your health isn't doing well and the reality of pain is with you constantly. There are real life problems like unmet bills, broken relationships and death.
So how then can we be grateful on a day-to-day basis? How can we make our gratitude last? The key is what we focus our gratitude on. If we are only thankful for our health and suddenly find we don?t have it our gratitude is shaken. If we are only grateful for financial abundance, when finances are tough, again our gratitude is shaken. Lasting gratitude can only be found in what is eternal, something that cannot be shaken and never changes. These are known as our eternal blessings, the things we do not readily see on a daily basis. What are those eternal blessings?
As Christians we are receiving a kingdom that doesn't change!
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our "God is a consuming fire." Hebrews 12:28,29
This scripture reminds us of what our future holds as a Christian. We do need constant reminders because as people we are short sighted. We see what is currently happening in our lives and that becomes our reality, when in truth what is unseen is eternal, real and lasting.
We can also set ourselves up for frustration when we set expectations for this life without keeping in mind how quickly things can change, so when our expectations are not met we become frustrated and ungrateful. Therefore it is important to keep in mind that change is inevitable in this life. ALL things change in this life, both the good and the bad. It is only when we get to heaven that we will see the fruits of our labor here on this earth.
As a Christian if on a daily basis you will focus on your eternal blessings your gratitude will be lasting! How do you keep your focus daily? Practice daily routines involving scripture and thankfulness for eternal blessings. Below is an example that you can say each morning and evening.
I am thankful for Jesus, for my salvation, for a kingdom that cannot be shaken! One that is filled with love, beauty and eternal joy! There will be no more tears, sorrow, sickness, pain or death!
Hebrews 12:28,29, Revelation 21:4
